Back to School Exams: It’s Not Just About 20/20

With summer coming to an end and back-to-school in full force, now is the perfect time for parents to book an eye exam for their children.

Eye exams are a crucial component to a child’s overall health and well-being. A healthy visual system not only allows your child to effortlessly see the whiteboard, but ensures proper cognitive, social, academic, and athletic development. If undiagnosed or left untreated, visual problems within school-aged children can manifest into greater developmental issues such as amblyopia (“lazy eye”). Furthermore, if misdiagnosed, visual problems can be mistaken for learning disorders such as ADD or ADHD. Therefore, it should be a top priority to get children examined at this critical stage to correct any visual impairments they may have, and equip them with any and all necessary tools for their success.

When your child comes in for their eye exam, our skilled doctors will evaluate the inside of their eyes and perform tests on their binocular vision, eye tracking skills, hand-eye
coordination, peripheral vision, and visual acuity.

Common visual problems that our eye care providers are looking for include:

  • Myopia (Nearsightedness): difficulty seeing things far away, such as a whiteboard
  • Hyperopia (Farsightedness): difficulty seeing things up close, such as reading a book
  • Astigmatism: words and objects appear wavy and distorted
  • Amblyopia (Lazy eye): one eye has poorer vision compared to the other eye, leading to its underdevelopment

These and other visual conditions can quickly change as a child grows and develops – even more rapidly than typically observed in adults. Therefore, regularly scheduled comprehensive examinations before the start of the school year are a great way to ensure your little ones are seeing to the best of their abilities. Following your child’s baseline eye exam, they should return at a minimum of every two years if no vision correction is needed. If eyeglasses or contacts are needed, then the child should return annually or as recommended by their doctor. When it comes to physically scheduling your child’s eye exam, choose a time during the day when he or she is the most awake and happy.

By booking an appointment with one of our doctors, you as a parent can have piece of mind about the health and safety of your son or daughter’s visual health. Even more so,
you will have the confidence that your child is prepared to tackle any and all challenges inside and outside of the classroom.
