Protecting Your Central Vision from Year-Round Mojave Sun: Spotting Macular Degeneration Warning Signs in Vegas

Living in Las Vegas means making sun protection part of your everyday routine. While sunglasses help protect your eyes outdoors, preserving central vision also requires attention to changes that may signal age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. At Optic Gallery, we screen for macular degeneration during comprehensive eye exams and help our patients understand their eye health.

How Macular Degeneration Affects Your Sight

AMD damages the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. It can make reading, recognizing faces, and seeing fine details more difficult.

Dry AMD generally progresses gradually, while wet AMD involves abnormal blood vessels that can cause faster vision loss. Early AMD may have no noticeable symptoms, making regular eye exams important even when your vision seems clear.

Macular Degeneration Warning Signs to Watch For

Changes in central vision deserve attention. Contact an eye doctor if you notice:

•          Straight lines, such as doorframes or printed text, appearing wavy or crooked

•          A blurry, dark, or blank spot in the center of your vision

•          Increasing difficulty reading or recognizing faces

•          Colors appearing less bright than before

•          More difficulty seeing details in dim lighting

New distortion, a central blind spot, or sudden vision loss requires immediate eye care. Do not wait for your next routine appointment. These changes can indicate AMD or another condition that needs prompt evaluation.

Make Sun Protection a Year-Round Habit

Whether you are walking through your neighborhood or spending time outdoors in the Mojave Desert, choose sunglasses labeled UV400 or offering 99 to 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. Larger frames or wraparound styles help limit light entering around the lenses, and a wide-brimmed hat adds coverage.

Polarized lenses can reduce reflected glare, but polarization alone does not establish UV protection. Check the UV rating when selecting sunglasses.

Sun protection supports overall eye health, but it does not guarantee protection against macular degeneration. Age, family history, and smoking are established AMD risk factors.

What We Check During Your Eye Exam

Our comprehensive eye exams assess more than your glasses prescription. We evaluate eye health and look for signs of macular degeneration, including changes that may develop before you notice symptoms. We also discuss your medical history and family history to guide recommendations for ongoing care.

A dilated retinal examination helps detect AMD, and additional imaging may be recommended when needed. Your exam schedule should reflect your age, risk factors, and findings.
